Mariam is a 37 year old woman from Chad, Africa. She entered the Literacy Program at the Jersey City Library in December, 2005. Although she speaks four languages, when Mariam arrived she was unable to read or write in any language. Since being enrolled in the Literacy Program, she's learned to read and write her name, address, telephone number and has generally improved both her reading and her speaking skills. Mariam is very motivated to pursue her education. She has enrolled in several classes offered by the Literacy Program in order to take advantage of every available opportunity to learn, and has advanced tremendously. In 2007, Mariam was awarded ESL Student of the Year in recognition of her superior accomplishments. Learn more about the Literacy Program at the Jersey City Library.
